Hopefully soon! We submitted our architectural plans to the MTA over one year ago. Since that time we have been anxiously awaiting the approval of those plans! We will be opening our fabulous new shop as soon as we get the OK from the MTA! Our new shop will be the first store on the right as you enter the subway station from Surf Ave!.
The city has just completed a long process of rezoning Coney Island. Coney Island was previously zoned to allow ONLY amusement uses. In a hotly contested rezoning process, the City voted to allow other uses such as retail and high rise hotels in the Amusement District. While the City was undergoing the rezoning process of the historic amusement district, a land speculator named Thor Equities (no, not Disney) bought up most of this area. Since purchasing this land they have ravished Coney Island. The city is currently trying to buy this land back from the developers but thus far they have refused to sell. Please consult our fabulous web site www.SaveConeyIsland.net to find out more information about the redevelopment and to find out how YOU can help Save Coney Island.
No! There are still many vibrant attractions to visit in Coney Island! Click here for a full list of all the open attractions! Coney Island is still ALIVE!!
Sigh... I know... it is very confusing. Coney Island is not one single amusement park. It is made up of many amusement parks, rides, games, resteraunts, food stands etc. One of the larger amusement parks, Astroland, was shut down in 2008. However, there are still many fabulous reasons to visit Coney Island. I will be honest with you, Coney Islnad is not in the best of shape. A develper has shut down many of the beloved attractions in Coney Island (such as my shop on the boardwalk and Astroland)! I hope, with all of my heart, for better days for Coney Island. But, in the mean time, we have to support the businesses that are still keeping Coney Island alive!!
No!! The Mermaid Parade is created by a non-profit arts organization called Coney Island USA! This organization will remain in Coney Island despite the changes. The City awarded Coney Island USA for their decades of cultural enhancement of Coney Island and bought them their building! The Mermaid Parade is an annual event that takes place on the Saturday after the Summer Solstice. It is a party beyond compare - glitter! costumes! body paint! feathers galore! It is a spectacle not to be missed! It is definately worth a trip to NYC JUST to experience the wonders of the Mermaid Parade! You will not be disappointed! You can find out more about this fabulous event at www.ConeyIslandUSA.com
No!! All of these Coney Island icons are historical landmarks! They will not be torn down despite the changes which happen around them.
Unfortunately this may be true. The city's new rezoning proposal calls for a gigantic high-rise to be built where the original Nathan's stands. Unfortunately, they envision a high rise being built there with a Nathan's themed resteraunt on the ground floor. This just would not be the same as the original Nathan's! Some Coney Island lovers are trying to landmark Nathans so that it will not be torn down! Visit www.SaveConeyIsland.net to find out more about how you can help save Nathan's and other historical icons of Coney Island.
The renderings that you've seen in the newspaper are just hypothetical renderings of what might be built in Coney Island one day! Right now there are no definite plans about exactly what will be built in Coney Island. Many of those renderings have been created to sway the public's opinion. Do not be fooled by flashy renderings! Many of them are vague and lacking in content and some of them are blatantly inacurate. The rezoning of Coney Island has been approved. This zoning dictates what can be built on the land. The zoning states that high-rise hotels and retail can be built in the amusement district along with a small portion of traditional outdoor amusement uses. However, no definate plans have been released by the city or the private developer which illustrate exactly what will be built there.
Right now there is no plan to keep the current small businesses community in Coney Island. Most of the small businesses have year to year leases. We have no gaurentee that we will be able to continue running our businesses in Coney Island. I always hoped that I'd be an old lady with pink hair, in roller skates, selling tee shirts on the boardwalk in Coney Island, but right now my future in Coney Island is very uncertain. I hope there will be a place for Lola Staar within the new development. But honestly, I really do not know if, after all of these changes, it will even be 'Coney Island' anymore.
I hope for the best but right now I really don't know. At this moment the future of Coney Island is an elaborate enigma. Much of it has been demolished by Thor Equities and the City's rezoning plan allows for some very controversal uses in the Amusement District. However it is not the end. The fight to Save Coney Island is not over! To find out how you can help ensure Coney Island remains a world renowned amusement destination, please visit www.SaveConeyIsland.net
